Nutrition Therapy

Functional Nutrition

What you eat can have a positive or negative effect on your overall health. Functional nutrition is the use of food as medicine to improve, prevent or reverse health conditions. Research shows that making dietary changes can help decrease inflammation and stress in the body, and reduce risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and other chronic conditions.

We know there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to healthy eating. Our registered dietitian nutritionist examines your diet, lifestyle, environment, and genetic factors that may be contributing to illness or chronic kidney disease treatment. Our goal is to understand your health concerns and wellness goals, and design a personalized eating and lifestyle plan that’s just for you.

Types of conditions we see

Functional nutrition can be used as a complementary therapy to traditional medical care and can benefit patients of all ages. We help patients with a wide range of health concerns, including:

  • Digestive issues
  • Hypertension
  • Leaky gut
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Weight concerns
  • Side effects of cancer treatment
  • Diabetes or blood sugar issues
  • Body inflammation
  • Food sensitivities
  • Back and joint pain
  • General wellness

Nutrition Therapy Treatment Options

At your first visit, we will review your complete medical and dietary history, and conduct a nutrition assessment. We use these findings to develop a tailored eating and lifestyle plan designed to meet your health and wellness goals. The most common diets recommended include:

  • A plant-based diet
  • A low FODMAP diet
  • Anti-candida diet
  • Low glycemic index diet
  • Elimination or rotational diets

Our nutritionist also works closely with a Functional Medicine physician and the entire integrative medicine team, to create a holistic, or “whole person,” approach to wellness.

Your dietary plan may also include physician-grade nutritional supplements. Learn more about nutritional supplements.

Collaborative Care

Our dietitian nutritionist works closely with primary care and other medical specialties, such as pain management, cardiology, endocrinology, oncology and gastroenterology, to provide streamlined, coordinated care for all patients. Your treatment plan will become part of your Henry Ford electronic medical record, making it available for your other providers to view.
